There was a questionable log on to my gmail account. It was offline. I went to the gmail site and changed my password. I went to Internet accounts and entered my new password. On the account preference in Mail 10.1 there is no place to edit incoming mail server. In the Server setting Tab it says Outgoing Server 'none'.
From the Gmail web client, click Settings from the cog menu. In the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, click Enable IMAP. Click Save Changes. Click OK, and your Gmail account is now setup on your Mac. Now when you get a new email message, it will appear inside of Apple Mail. Anything you do inside of your account on your Mac will sync with your IMAP Gmail account, including the Gmail web interface.
In Edit SMTP server I can chose Gmail but it says (offline) and when I close the drop down it goes back to none. I tried to set up a new gmail account and it says account already exists. I have been using Mail on my Mac for a long time. I changed the password on my Gmail account, was asked to reenter it on the Internet Accounts preference panes which I did. As described above, the incoming server was 'offline' and there is no place to create it or correct it in the Mail preference. I restarted Mail, maybe I rebooted and it worked.
This morning I rebooted my computer and the Gmail account is 'offline' again. I quit mail and restarted but it still is offline. I had no trouble signing into the account on my browser. Fortunately the Gmail account is not my most important one. On a side note, when I tried to send a message from my icloud account, I was aked to chose a server. I said 'always use icloud.
In the list Gmail appears as 'Gmail (Offline)' Thank you. I had tried something like that, but it always reverted automatically to 'None' (in the 'Outgoing Mail Account'). I ended up:.
changing password on Google Gmail. sending a message to force password request.
right clicking on 'Google' under inbox, and selecting 'Take Google Online'. quitting and restarting and it now all seems to work fine. If other people have the same issue about reverting to 'None' I suggest trying the Right-Click on 'Google' under inbox (unless there is a better official solution). Anyway thanks for the responses.
Sorry - none of this has helped in my case. Running Sierra 10.12.1. GMail's outgoing server has simply vanished.
Preferences for GMail show 'None' under outgoing server. Connection Doctor doesn't help, as it shows that there is no SMTP server for GMail. GMail shows that it is online. 'Edit Gmail' - Server Settings, Outgoing Mail Account is 'None'. Dropdown shows Gmail. Select Gmail.
Wait 3 seconds, and window reverts to None. Choose 'Edit SMTP Server List'. Gmail is not listed. Create new outgoing server with correct Gmail SMTP settings. Wait 3 seconds, and window reverts to None. Choose 'Edit SMTP Server List' again. Gmail SMTP server has vanished again.

I can't right-click and take Gmail online, as it is already online. I can take it offline, then online again. That makes no difference. Neither does closing MacMail and reopening. Tried creating a new Gmail account. It won't create, as the old one exists.
Tried it as 'Other Mail Account' - can't connect - probably because you can't specify the settings. It really is ridiculous that an 'upgrade' to an app that worked properly is such a disaster now. C'mon, Apple. Let's get this fixed! To check port settings an article is there: Please type your web mail id and its password in the empty field it will give the port numbers, in case if they are incorrect it will show immediately. And two or three days back I even removed all the SMTP settings and established the server settings with the same method as posted in previous screen shot, it showed no SMTP but it was configured after few minutes.
Also make sure set DNS servers as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, remove any proxies, set location as automatic, wifi security setting as WPA2 personal AES. Also if you open mail go to connection doctor and it is showing red dot in front of SMTP either it is an issue with port settings or keychains. Please go to system preferences internet accounts enter your web mail id & password or if you are using I cloud can you login & also try to login in App Store, I tunes, in www.icloud.com, www.appleid.com if you are unable to login it means keychain is corrupted. Before following the steps make sure you have four digit I cloud verification code with you in records plus all web mail ids, may be I cloud id, Apple ID and their respective password, even wireless network id & password and registered mobile device. Click on go to go folder & type /Library find keychain folder delete all the contents & empty to the trash, restart & empty the trash, so all passwords are deleted.
NOTE: Be careful do not delete the keychain folder only the contents. Now again enter system preferences internet accounts type your web mail & its password, follow upcoming steps and you will enter the web mail.
